PRE ROMANESQUE FONT
10th-11th century

Symbol
Most Pre-Romanesque sculpture is associated with relief carvings. This font is carved in the round with a chain of rope-work and band decoration, blind arcades, and two sides with palmtree motifs: symbol of rebirth and paradise. The four corner decorations suggests the ‘heads’ as frequently carved on water fonts. Four marks in the upper edge of a lost cover that once protected the holy water hold inside.
Iconoclasm
The remote Auvergne once had many small romanesque chapels and churches that housed stone objects inside. During periods of iconoclasm: reformation and revolution, the contents of dispossessed churches has been luted . Some pieces survived and stayed protected in private hands.
